The story of Baumann’s foray into saint making is a little-known aspect of the artist’s luminous career. Associated more with color woodcuts of billowing summer clouds and autumn arroyos blooming with chamisa, the artist has been largely unacknowledged in discussions of Spanish Colonial art and the study and appreciation of the santos of New Mexico. Printing the Spirit is a testament to Baumann’s unwavering commitment to opening the world’s eyes to the quiet grace and enduring importance of the santo tradition.

Chimayó is renowned for its Hispano master weaving families, lowriders, and its storied church, El Santurio de Chimayó. The old Plaza del Cerro had once been the village’s center place, where locals gathered to pick up mail, socialize and celebrate religious and family events. Over the years after WWII, the plaza was neglected, but the memory of the once-vibrant place remained vivid in the stories of village elders.

Early on the morning of August 8, 1881, seven Apache warriors and twelve Navajo raiders made their way on horseback down a piñon-and-ponderosa-shrouded plateau in west central New Mexico Territory to the rock and terrones La Cebolla Ranch house of Domingo and Plácida Romero Gallegos. The raiders killed Domingo Gallegos along with a ranch hand, José Mará Vargas, carried off Plácida Romero, and rode off into the timbered high country to the east. This is the story of Plácida Romero’s capture, heartbreaking agony, and miraculous escape passed from generation to generation and became the subject of one of the most fascinating and captivating traditional (Hispanic) native ballads in New Mexico history.
